MIL-G-80048C
3.4 Components. The machine shall consist primarily of a bed, grinding
and regulating wheelhead assemblies, workrests, grinding and regulating
wheel dressers, wheel guards, driving mechanisms and operating controls.
3,4.1 Bed. The bed shall be a one-piece rectangular box section ribbed
and brace to minimize distortion, deflection and vibration under normal
workloads. Guideways shall be provided for supporting either the grinding
wheelhead assembly or the regulating wheelhead assembly according to
machine design. The hydraulic oil and coolant reservoirs may be integral
parts of the bed or furnished as separate units. Means for leveling shall
be provided around the periphery of the base. When applicable, an access
door(s) or removable plate(s) shall be provided for servicing components
housed within the bed.

with means for controlling coolant flow shall be provided.
3.4.2,1 Grinding wheel spindle. The grinding wheel spindle shall be of
alloy steel arranged with a spindle nose at one end and means for accepting
a driving mechanism at the other end. The design of the spindle and the
configuration of the bearing support system shall minimize sag caused by
the weight of the spindle and wheel deflection caused by all forces
operating on the spindle.
The spindle shall be mounted in lubricated
bearings unless sealed-for-life type or otherwise permanently lubricated
bearings are utilized. Spindle noses shall be designed to securely accept
wheel mount assemblies.
3.4.2.2
Grinding wheel drive.
The grinding wheel shall be driven
through a motor and belt(s) and pulley arrangement. Motor speed shall he
constant. Means for adjusting belt tension shall be provided.

attached to the bed or wheel housing casting. A micro-meter type indicator
or dial graduated in 0.001 inch increments shall be provided for
designating movement.. Range of dressing shall be not less than O to 2-1/2
inches bar movement on Size 1 machines, and not less than O to 3-1/2 inches
bar movement on Size 2, 3 and 4 machines. A hydraulic feeding mechanism
shall be provided for traversing the diamond across the wheel. The dresser
shall be capable of contour dressing as well as straight dressing.
