COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION GRINDING MACHINE, BENCH, HAND POWERED
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this
commercial item description for all federal agencies.
1. SCOPE. This commercial item description (CID) establishes the government acquisition requirements for hand-powered, bench-mounted, grinding machines with a six-inch diameter grinding wheel used for tool sharpening in situations where power-driven machines are impractical.
2. CLASSIFICATION. The machine shall be classified and identified by types in accordance with the defining duty ratings and gear ratios specified. The selected types of machines to be supplied shall be specified in the acquisition order (see 7.5(b)).
Type I - Heavy duty - Rotation of the grinding wheel is accomplished through the use of a gear mechanism with a ratio of 13 to 1 or more.
Type II - Light duty - Rotation of the grinding wheel is accomplished through the use of a gear mechanism with a ratio of 9 to 1 or more.
3. SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS. The machine shall meet the requirements specified in this document and shall conform to current industrial standards. Machine operation shall be smooth with minimal noise and the grinding wheel shall not slip during operation.
3.1 Components. The machine shall consist of bushings, a gear case, gears, a handcrank, a tool rest, a mounting flange, a screw clamp, an oil cap, paint, and a grinding wheel.
3.2 Bushings. Each machine shall have at least four bushing supports. Two of the bushings shall support the grinding wheel shaft and two shall support the hand crank shaft.
3.3 Gear case. The gear case shall have sufficient size and strength to support the machine components. All encased gears shall operate smoothly and without excessive noise.
